Lemon Squeezy charges 5% + 50¢ per transaction on the total order value, on a $0/month plan. A $10 sale therefore costs $1.00 and nets $9.00; a $100 sale costs $5.50 and nets $94.50 (calculated 2026-10-25). That is 70% more than Stripe's 5.9% on the same $10 charge, and the reason is that Lemon Squeezy is the merchant of record, not just the payment form. This page takes the fee schedule as published on 2026-10-25 and separates what the fee buys from what it costs.

What the fee actually includes

The published fee is a single line, but it replaces four separate purchases: card processing, currency conversion, tax calculation and tax remittance. Lemon Squeezy states plainly that the platform fee covers taxes, and that as merchant of record it carries the liability for collecting, calculating and filing them. A merchant who sells a $10 download to a buyer in France does not file a French VAT return, because Lemon Squeezy is the seller on the invoice.

The tax line is where the arithmetic gets interesting. A $10 product sold into France carries 20% VAT, so the buyer pays $12.00 and $2.00 of that is tax. The fee is calculated on the $12.00 total, not on the $10.00 net: $0.50 fixed, 5% ($0.60), and 1.5% international ($0.18) come to $1.28, leaving $8.72 of your $10.00 (calculated 2026-10-25). Tax raises the fee because the fee is charged on the gross.

How we measured it

We loaded the pricing page and the fees help article on 2026-10-25 and used only rates printed there, including the vendor's own worked example for a French buyer. Where the page states a rule in prose — custom pricing below $10, tax liability sitting with them — we repeated the rule rather than inventing a number. No benchmark was run and no test checkout was created.

What changes in practice

At $10 the fee is 10% of the sale, which is the worst ratio on the table. It falls to 7.5% at $20 and 5.5% at $100, so the same software priced at $20 instead of $10 keeps 83% more per sale in absolute terms. Below $10 the company itself points you at custom pricing, which is a polite way of saying the standard fee is not built for that ticket size.

The surcharges are easy to forget because they are not in the headline. A subscription sold to a European buyer paying with PayPal costs 5% + 50¢ + 1.5% + 1.5% + 0.5%, which on $10 is $1.35 and leaves $8.65 — against $9.00 for the plain US card case.

Payouts are the second cost centre, and they scale with frequency rather than volume. A merchant outside the US paying out weekly pays 1% each time; someone using PayPal payouts abroad pays 3% capped at $30, so a $1,000 payout costs $30 while a $200 payout costs $6.00.

Bottom line

At a $10 price point Lemon Squeezy keeps $1.00 of every sale, and at $20 it keeps $1.50 — the fee only becomes competitive past roughly $100, where 5.5% is within two points of what a self-managed tax stack costs in time. If you sell digital goods to consumers in several tax jurisdictions and do not want to register for VAT yourself, that premium buys a real service; if you sell to businesses in one country, it buys very little.
