HubSpot's Starter and Professional tiers are not two sizes of the same product; they are billed on different structures. Starter is $20 per seat per month at list, currently discounted to $7 with an annual upfront commitment. Professional on Marketing Hub is $890 per month, or $800 per month billed annually, and that price already carries 3 core seats. Sales Hub Professional is priced per seat again at $100 per seat per month, or $90 billed annually. On top of both Professional tiers sits a mandatory one-time onboarding fee, $3,000 for Marketing Hub and $1,500 for Sales Hub, which is the line most comparisons leave out.
Starter and Professional, side by side

What three seats cost in year one
| Cost line | Marketing Hub | Sales Hub |
|---|---|---|
| Starter, 3 seats at list | $720 per year | $720 per year |
| Professional, 3 seats, annual billing | $9,600 per year | $3,240 per year |
| One-time onboarding | $3,000 | $1,500 |
| Year-one total, annual billing | $12,600 | $4,740 |
All totals are arithmetic on the published rates (calculated 2026-10-25).
What the numbers actually mean
The Marketing Hub jump is the expensive one. Three seats on Starter cost $720 a year at list, while Professional costs $12,600 in year one, a multiple of 17.5 (calculated 2026-10-25). Of that total, $3,000 is onboarding paid once and $9,600 is subscription, so the recurring bill after year one is $9,600 rather than $12,600 on annual billing.
Money that Marketing Professional charges per platform rather than per seat changes the shape of the bill. The $890 covers three core seats, so a three-person team pays $296.67 per seat per month, while a six-person team on the same plan pays $1,025 per month, or $170.83 per seat (calculated 2026-10-25). Starter moves in the opposite direction: every seat is a full $20, so a ten-person team on Starter pays $200 per month while a ten-person team on Professional pays $890 plus $315 for the seven extra core seats, or $1,205 (calculated 2026-10-25).
Sales Hub is the cheaper path into Professional. At $90 per seat on annual billing, three seats are $3,240 a year against $9,600 for Marketing, and the onboarding fee is half the size. A team that mainly needs pipeline stages, sequences and forecasting rather than email campaigns can reach Professional without the Marketing Hub price.
The discount is a timing trap. Starter's $7 figure requires upfront payment on an annual commitment, and the same product is $10 per seat per month without a commitment against a $20 list price. Any plan that assumes Starter at $7 should also assume it can end.
How we measured it
Prices come from the HubSpot Marketing Hub and Sales Hub pricing pages fetched on 2026-10-25, plus the Marketing Hub Starter product page for the promotional terms. Figures were cross-checked against the structured offer data embedded in those pages, which lists Marketing Professional at $890, Sales Professional at $100 and Enterprise at $3,600 and $150. No trial was started and no quote was requested. Seat totals and multi-year sums are arithmetic on published rates and are marked calculated.
What changes in practice
Price the onboarding fee into year one or the comparison is wrong. Professional on Marketing Hub is $9,600 a year in subscription, so a $3,000 one-time fee is a 31% surcharge on the first year (calculated 2026-10-25) and nothing in year two.
Do not compare per-seat numbers across tiers. Marketing Professional's per-seat cost depends on team size because three seats are bundled, which means a five-person team really pays $980 per month, or $196 per seat, not $890 (calculated 2026-10-25). Starter is the only tier where per-seat pricing means what it says.
Treat the $7 promotion as a trial price. Budget the $20 list rate for anything longer than the promotional period, and keep the annual commitment question separate from the tier decision, because mixing the two is how teams end up locked into Professional at list.
Bottom line
For three seats, Starter is $720 a year and Marketing Professional is $12,600 in year one, or $9,600 a year after that (calculated 2026-10-25). Buy Professional when you need its automation and reporting and can absorb the $3,000 onboarding, and check Sales Hub first: at $4,740 for three seats in year one it is under half the Marketing Hub equivalent.
Frequently asked questions
Is the $3,000 onboarding fee optional?
No. The pricing page footnote states the cost shown does not include the required, one-time Professional Onboarding for a fee of $3,000, and the same footnote structure appears on Enterprise at $7,000. Sales Hub Professional carries a $1,500 version and Sales Hub Enterprise $3,500.
Is Marketing Hub Starter really $7 per seat?
It is a promotion, not list price. Starter is normally $20 per month per seat; the current offer is up to 65% off, at $7 per month per seat with upfront payment and an annual commitment, or $10 per month per seat with no annual commitment.
Why is Marketing Hub Professional priced per month rather than per seat?
Because the platform fee includes three core seats. $890 per month covers three users, and additional core seats are $45 each per month, so the effective per-seat cost falls as the team grows.
How many marketing contacts does each tier include?
Starter includes 1,000 marketing contacts and Professional includes 2,000. Professional's extra contacts are sold in blocks of 5,000, starting at $250 per month for the first block above the included 2,000.
